Tension is high in Nairobi’s Mathare slums after two gangs clashed leading to the torching of several houses in Mathare Number 10 and 3c areas.trouble started after one gang from Mathare number 3c popularly known as Bondeni stole a motorbike from Mathare Number 10.
Many residents including women and children in number 10 area vacated their houses last night after the gang from 3c threatened to burn them inside the houses.
Christopher Ochieng a resident of the area says that trouble started after one gang from Mathare number 3c popularly known as Bondeni stole a motorbike from Mathare Number 10.
The other gang from Number 10 then revenged and forcefully took another motorbike from the other faction in 3c.
“They then demanded the other gang to first return their motorbike in Number 10. The Bondeni guys then dismantled the motorbike and threw it back to Number 10. Number 10 guys also dismantled the motorbike and took it to Jonsaga Police Station,” said Ochieng.
In retaliation, 3c gang raided the area and started burning houses in Number 10.
Ochieng says that their efforts to get the police to quell the chaos have not been fruitful.

Several houses have so been burnt into ashes and the remaining few residents packed their belongings ready to leave.
“What is the work of the police? During maandamano they were very ready to get inside this place to clobber us including children. Right now we are asking them for help but they are nonresponsive,” he said.
No deaths have so far been reported from the violence.
