President William Ruto today presided over the official opening of Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies microbiology laboratory in Syokimau,Machakos County.

Ruto was accompanied with Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha,Public Secretary Mary Muthoni, Health experts,doctors,Bishop,Church leaders and health workers of Syokimau.

Through his Twitter/X account,he said the MED will help advance universal access to quality healthcare in the country.

”In Syokimau,Machakos County,officially opened the Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies’ Microbiology Laboratory that will help advance universal access to quality health care in the county.”He said.

He added that the strong investment in the local production of pharmaceuticals and consumable medical supplies will ensure that Kenya competitively manufacture drugs for domestic market.

”It will cut our annual imports bill by Ksh76 billion,boost our export earnings ,create more jobs and in the long-run,grow our economy.”He added.

MEDS is a faith-based non-profit organization established in 1986.

According to Reverend Charles who is the board chairman,MED microbiology was started by 1986 by Late Reverend Sister Mary Joane.

Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS) is a Christian and not-for-profit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya. It is a registered Trust of Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) and Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK).

MEDS core mandate includes a supply chain for reliable, quality and affordable Health Products and Technologies; Quality Assurance and Health Advisory Services. It was established in 1986, and operates all over Kenya and other regions of Africa.

According to today opening the team revealed that the private facility was constructed at a cost of Sh100 million.

The commissioning now means the facility will be able to do sterility testing by membrane filtration, growth promotion test of microbiological media and microbiological assays.

It will also perform bacterial endotoxin testing,microbial limit testing and bio-burden testing among other tests.

It will serve people within Machakos that is Makueni,Kitui and Machakos.
