President William Ruto has called for a swift and transparent investigation into the death of Alber Ojwang.

In a statement, President Ruto extended his condolences to the family of the late Ojwang, describing the incident as a “cruel loss” and a “heartbreaking and unacceptable” tragedy.

“Like most Kenyans, and especially as a parent, I received the news of the death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody with utter shock and deep dismay,” the President said.

Condemning the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death, President Ruto warned that any actions or omissions — including negligence or criminal conduct by police officers — would not be tolerated.

He reminded members of the National Police Service of their duty to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals in their custody.

“Whenever they take a person into custody, they assume a tremendous responsibility,” he said, urging the police to discharge this duty “conscientiously and without fail.”

Underscoring his government’s commitment to police accountability, the President reaffirmed his belief in strengthening the autonomy of the police service as a means of enhancing professionalism and restoring public trust.

He directed the National Police Service to fully cooperate with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) in investigating Ojwang’s death.

“The Service must rise to the challenge of dealing with crime while eradicating misconduct and unprofessional behavior within its own ranks,” he noted.

As investigations commence, the President urged Kenyans to remain patient and avoid drawing premature conclusions, expressing confidence that the truth will emerge.

“I fully expect that the truth about what happened to Ojwang will be established in due course, and that justice will be served,” he said.

The case has sparked public concern and renewed scrutiny on police conduct in Kenya, with rights groups and civil society calling for systemic reforms to curb abuse within the law enforcement system.
