Ogolla takes over from Robert Kibochi

President William Ruto has appointed him as the Chief of Defence Forces to replace outgoing General Robert Kibochi.

He will be taking over from Robert Kibochi, who is retiring, even though he has not yet completed his four-year term.

General Ogolla was until the appointment serving as the Vice Chief of the Defence forces.

“His excellency Dr. William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, and commander in chief of the Defence Forces, pursuant to section 9(2), a of the Kenya Defence Forces Act, has today promoted Lieutenant General Francis Francis Omondi Ogolla to the rank of General and appointed him Chief of the Defence Forces(CDF),”read a circular from the Ministry of Defence.

The four-year term for Kibochi, who was appointed in May 2020, was supposed to come to an end in May next year.

However, given the fact that he turns 64 this year, the age factor takes precedence. As such, Ogolla will be taking over as the new Chief of Defence Forces.

General Ogolla’s appointment has not been without controversy. Some of his critics, particularly those who supported the presidency of William Ruto in the 2022 general election, have accused him of trying to engage in politics, even though he was in the military.

This is after he was mentioned in the Bomas of Kenya events of the August 9, 2022, general election, in which Ruto was elected president.

Lietenant General Ogolla was among the top National Security Advisory Council officials who are alleged to have visited former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati during the counting of presidential votes.

They reportedly asked him, as well as the electoral commissioners, to moderate the results in favour of Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga, or even force a run-off.

General Ogolla takes over at a time when Kenya is facing numerous security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and political tensions.
