Two police officers have been placed in lawful custody after a firearm was reported missing as two prisoners escaped from cells.
Police constables Anjeline Epuro and Christopher Kipchoge are reported to have left both the report office and sentry unmanned leading to the escape of two suspects from the cells.
The incident happened between 3am and 5 am at Shikhendu Police Station, Kiminini Sub County, Transnzoia County.
The matter was reported by Chief Inspector Philip Koskei who is in charge of the Shikhendu Police Station.
“Today between 0300 hours and 0520 hours No. 118063 PC Anjeline Epuyo and No 56852 PC Christopher Kipchoge both report office and cell sentry respectively left the station briefly to their houses which are within the station police lines,” reads the report.
When PC Anjeline Epuyo resurfaced at 0520 hrs she discovered that two prisoners namely Daniel Wanjala Sindano and Samuel Wafula Barasa had escaped.
It is reported that the two broke the wooden ceiling before cutting through iron sheet and jumped into the report office where they broke steel box armoury and stole one AK47 rifle serial number. 31581. The gun was loaded with 14 rounds of 7.62mm.
“They then dashed out unnoticed through the station main door which was not locked,” reads the report.
The suspects had been charged with offence stock theft.
The two had stolen two cows that were recovered and were due to appear before court today January 26.
A search has been mounted to re arrest and recover the stolen firearm while the two officers who were on duty have been arrested and are assisting in investigation.
