PSG’s Manager Backed Despite Heavy Defeat
Three days after Paris Saint-Germain were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Barcelona,the side’s head coach Unai Emery has received the full and entire support of the club’s owners.
PSG’s president Al-Khelaifi issued a statement pledging his full support to the manager. “Unai has the qualities in which we believe. He has my full and entire support,” he told Le Parisien newspaper.
It was a historic moment when the Catalans overturned a first leg 4-0 deficit in the Champions League to win 6-5 on aggregate at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.The second leg defeat of 6-1 ensured Barcelona reaches the quarterfinals in the greatest comeback in the history of the European competition.
Al-Khelaifi disclosed that discussions on the changes needed to stir the club forward.The president’s remarks comes amid reports stating that PSG’s players and their families were threatened at the airport on return from Barcelona.
“With him, we will discuss the changes that are needed in the close season. We are going to work to send the strongest signals that will show our ambitions are great,”he added.
However, the club’s chief pointed out poor officiating as the core reason to the heavy defeat.The Catalans were awarded two key penalties later in the second half of which they were all converted.
“The outcome of the match could have been different with more clear-sighted officiating,” said Al-Khelaifi.
“Everyone saw that Angel Di Maria should have had a penalty that would have made the score 2-3 and kill any suspense. Not to mention that there was no penalty on Suarez late in the game which was awarded”,he added.
