Approximately 20 pupils have been hospitalised after police lobbed teargas cannisters in their school during protests in Kawangware.

The affected pupils from Ndurarua Primary school were rushed to the hospital in police vans after the unfortunate incident.

The incident saw the school closed immediately by the administration.

“Some children reportedly collapsed due to the effects of the teargas cannisters. The school had to be closed immediately,” said an eyewitness.

One person was also shot during the incident and was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital after he was shot in the stomach.

“His name is Njoro, he is a businessman here. Police shot him in the stomach when he was trying to defend his friend,” said an eye witness.

Trouble started when police officers tried disperse traders who were protesting the demolition of their vibandas.

The demolitions reportedly started as early as 6 am.
