In a statement issued by the Seychelles Foreign Affairs Department, it was revealed that Vincent Meriton, a seasoned politician who has previously served as the country’s Vice President and Foreign Minister, has been selected as Seychelles’ nominee for the AUC Chairperson role.

Citing Meriton’s track record of advocating for Seychelles’ interests, particularly in the realm of the Blue Economy on the global stage, Seychelles affirms his suitability for the position.

Competition Intensifies with Multiple Nominees

Raila Odinga, who was the first to express interest in the AUC Chairperson position, now finds himself contending with formidable opponents.

Following his nomination, Somalia swiftly put forward ex-Foreign Affairs Minister Fawzia Yusuf Adam, while Djibouti followed suit by endorsing their Minister of Foreign Affairs Mahmoud Youssouf.

This flurry of nominations underscores the heightened competition for the leadership role within the African Union Commission.

Implications of Rotational Policy on East African Representation

The rotational nature of the AUC Chairperson position adds another layer of significance to the ongoing nomination process.

With the seat currently slated for the East African region, the selection of candidates from Somalia, Djibouti, and now Seychelles reflects the region’s determination to assert its influence and representation within the African Union.

As the race for the AUC Chairperson heats up, all eyes are on the East African region to see who will ultimately emerge as the front runner to succeed Moussa Faki from Chad.
