Residents left in the cold as strong winds blow roofs off

A section of residents and traders of Manyatta B in Kisumu county have been left homeless after strong winds blew off the roofs of their homes.

The strong winds which were accompanied by heavy rains saw the same houses flooded with water exposing them to diseases like cholera and pneumonia.

Some business people also suffered losses after their premises suffered the same fate as the homes.

Joseph Masinde a chemist operator says that his business premise was also destroyed by the heavy rains making him lose merchandize worth Ksh.200,000.

“The incident happened when I was in the building forcing me to run for safety. The strong winds blew off the rooftop of my chemist bringing down all the drugs on the floor which was also flooded by water,” said Masinde.

Jane Ongari says that area is usually characterized with strong winds. She says that the floods happen due to poor drainage system in the area.

“I am a resident and a business lady as well. Yesterday the wind took away our roof top too exposing us to the heavy rains. I incurred a huge loss on maize and my Mitumba as they were rained,” says Ongari.

She approximates her losses to Ksh.100,000.

The residents are now appealing to the Kisumu County government to sort out the drainage mess in the area.

“It must flood whenever it rains, this place has poor drainage, we had reported before but no action was taken. Let the county help us on this,” says Ongari.

They are appealing to the government to help them rebuild their houses.
