President William Ruto has announced that the government is planning to roll out electric boda bodas to cushion boda boda riders from the rising cost of living.

Ruto during Madaraka Day celebrations at Embu Stadium stated that these electric boda bodas will be more efficient and more affordable to the common mwananchi.

“Our boda boda industry is about to experience inclusive transformation through the introduction of more efficient, affordable and clean vehicles. With this intervention, owning and operating a boda boda will become affordable, secure and profitable,” said Ruto.

The Head of State stated that alongside electric boda bodas, the government will also launch electric Public Service Vehicles.

“As international petroleum prices continue to rise beyond reach, the cost of fuel locally rises steeply. Transport, as a component of household budgets, is affecting the cost of living. We have to liberate Kenyans from reliance on transport that depends on petroleum. For this reason, we are rolling out an electric vehicle public transport system which will bring down the cost of transport significantly,” he said.

Reduce Overreliance on Fuel

The head of state stated that they are trying to reduce overreliance on diesel and petrol by the PSVs in a bid to deal with the rising costs of transport.

Currently a litre of super petrol is retailing at Ksh.182.70 and that of diesel at Ksh.168.40 in Nairobi.

Ruto’s government removed the fuel subsidy that had been put by former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government shoring up the cost of fuel.

Meanwhile the government in the Finance Bill 2023 has proposed to double the Value Added Tax on petroleum products from eight per cent to 16 per cent under the Finance Bill, 2023
