President William Ruto has today appointed James Mwangi the CEO of Equity Bank as the new Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya.

The University a virtual public institution is based at Konza city Machakos County.

“I was very specific when I told CS Machogu on who the Chancellor should be …and it’s because this is a bottom up institution …this institution is going to give opportunity access to very ordinary people…people who ordinarily would not afford to acquire university education,”

He said.

During the launch ceremony that took place this morning, President Ruto emphasized the university’s mission to provide accessible higher education to ordinary citizens, including those like “Mama Mboga,” enabling them to pursue academic growth without the need for physical attendance in traditional classrooms.

“This is in my very honest opinion the university possibly of herdsmen, farmers, mama mboga’s, matatu drivers, bodaboda people, watch men as well as trained professionals and graduates,”

Courses offered

With distance learning as its cornerstone, students will have the flexibility to study at their own pace and convenience.

The Open University of Kenya is set to offer diverse courses, spanning the fields of science and technology, economics, education, and agriculture.

The inaugural intake of students is scheduled for September.

President Ruto further appointed Professor Ezra Maritim to serve as the university’s Council Chair, a crucial role that will ensure effective governance and strategic direction for the institution.
