Safaricom is set to release a sports documentary called ‘Road to Gold’, marking the telco’s 21-year journey of transforming lives in the sector.
The documentary will be available from 8th November as a mini- series on Safaricom’s BAZE platform, a mobile-first, video-on-demand service that offers a wide selection of local and regional short form videos.
The documentary features Kenya’s iconic sports legends such as Eliud Kipchoge, Catherine Ndereba, Collins Injera, Tegla Loroupe, Henry Wanyoike as well as current and past officials from various sports federations.
“Over the last two decades, Safaricom has continued to support and transform the lives of various sportsmen and women in the country.
Through events that we continue to sponsor such as the Safaricom Athletics Series, Lewa Marathon, BLAZE eSports and Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom, we have seen that sports have the potential to build cohesion among Kenyans in addition to nurturing talent”, said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom.
The documentary is part of the company’s ‘Twende Tukiuke’ brand campaign which is a callout for Kenyans to go beyond what is thought possible.
“We are particularly proud of the transformation witnessed among our youth as a result of investments we have made in various sports disciplines”, said Ndegwa.
Safaricom has invested over KES 1 billion in sports over the years ranging from football, athletics, motorsport, E-Sports and rugby to golf and charity runs.
This year alone the company has spent over KES 100 million supporting various events including the WRC Safari Rally, Kenya’s teams to the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics as well as The World Athletics Under 20 Championships held recently in Nairobi.
