Sex workers decry condom shortage
A section of sex workers in Nairobi’s Kangemi area are decrying the shortage of government supplied condoms in Nairobi.
The sex workers say that for quite some time now they have been missing the government supplied condom in public utilities.
Agnes Waithera a sex worker who spoke to Ghetto radio News says that the low supply of condoms has put their lives in danger.
Waithera says that they prefer the government supplied condom because of its quality as opposed to the ones sold in shops.
“The condoms have become very scarce. Kanjo are not distributing them anymore. Before we used to get extra, currently even getting a single packet is hard,” said Waithera.
“We prefer the government supplied condoms because they are of good quality. These that are bought in shops are putting us at risk because they burst in most instances,” she said.
Cidi Otieno of Kangemi Grassroots Human Rights Movement is appealing to the government to resolve the issue.
He also wants the issue of police harassment against commercial sex workers to be addressed urgently.
“We have received many reports as an organization from these sex workers. Mostly harassment and assault from police officers,” said Cidi.
“every Kenyan has a right, so there is no police officer authorized to assault any Kenyan despite their trade,” stated.
Otieno says that they are planning to seek audience with the Kangemi area police boss to have the matter addressed.
