Hundreds protesters in Mombasa County on Thursday marched on the streets to protest the shortage of antiretroviral (ARVs) drugs.
Addressing the press, the protesters who included sex workers and members of the LGBTQ community urged the government to immediately release ARVs to public facilities.
They further asked the government to prioritize procurement of ARVs in future to avoid shortage of the drugs.
They said the delays to supply ARVs in the counties has resulted in others abandoning drugs, something that has put their lives at risk.
“People will die if this shortage continues. We are taxpayers and this means it our basic right that we should not even miss such a thing,” said one protesters.

Kenya has experienced an acute shortage of ARVs since USAID, which exports the ARVs, halted supply through the KEMSA.
USAID accused Kemsa of corruption and mismanagement, allegations which Kemsa denied.
