Shalom hospital in Athi River has been temporarily sealed off after some patients in the facility succumbed to the deadly Covid-19.
In a statement issued by Machakos county gover Dr. Alfred Mutua, the decision to seal off the facility was arrived at following consultation with health officials and other stakeholders including Kenya Medical practitioners and Dentists Council and the Director-General of Health.
Through his Twitter handle, Mutua said several other patients and health workers at the hospital had been diagnosed with coronavirus after undergoing tests .
As a result of the deaths and new infections, Governor Mutua said members of the public would not be allowed to enter the hospitals as since it has officially been converted into a quarantine facility.
“Last night, my government, after consultations with the Kenya Medical practitioners an d Dentists Council and the Director-General of Health, SEALED off Shalom Hospital in Athi River following deaths of some patients due to COVID-19,” he said.
Mutua noted the facility may be sealed off for several days since the process of screening and testing for health workers at the hospital may time.
“The process of screening and testing for COVID -19 may take several days and has already started. Further decisions will be undertaken according to the evaluation of the relevant agencies involved in the provision of health care and combating of Covid-19,” he added.
