Shisha Smoking in Parklands Area Still High Despite Ban – Report

Parklands area has been named as the area with the highest consumption of shisha in Nairobi.

A research conducted by the Kenya Tobacco Alliance in five areas in Nairobi indicates that the compliance prevalence with the Shisha Ban in Parklands is at 57 percent meaning Shisha is consumed more in Parklands area.

Parklands area is followed by Mathare slums which is lightly above 60 percent the Langata at above 70 percent.

The research also found Westlands with the highest level of compliance at 100 percent.

KETCA Chairman Joel Gitali said the low level of non compliance in Parklands  follows the high number of University students in Parklands area who are the biggest consumers of shisha.

The research also revealed restaurants with the highest number of non compliance compared to bars and night clubs.

Though happy with the research, Gitali further stated that there are cases of people smoking shisha in their houses making it hard for the data collectors to access them.

The  research was conducted using a mobile app in five areas among them Eastleigh, Mathare, Parklands, Langata, Pipeline and Kasarani.
