Showdown Looms At Nairobi County Assembly Over Election Of Speaker
A showdown is today looming at the Nairobi County Assembly over the election of the assembly’s Speaker.
The MCAs who will be sworn in today will immediately embark on the first house business of electing the house speaker.
Already Kenya Kwanza MCAs have vowed to blooock the election of the speaker after their preferred candidate and outgoing speaker Benard Mutura was blocked by assmbly clerk Edward Gichana for not meeting the requirements.
During a presser yesterday, the MCAs cited mischief and political witch-hunt. They claimed that the Assembly seems to have settled on a candidate.
“The UDA MCAs want to express their sadness and shock because the Clerk seems to have a preferred candidate by imposing unconstitutional requirements so as to lock out other candidates. We will make sure nothing goes on here tomorrow,” Waithaka MCA Antony Kiragu told the media.
Azimio MCAs who are currently the majority in the house have fronted former Deputy Speaker Ken Ng’ondi for the seat.
More than nine candidates had been shortlisted by the clerk of the assembly for the seat.
