Shujaa feels cash crunch after SportPesa pull out

All is not rosy at Kenya Rugby Union, according to their Chairman, Richard Omwela.

Speaking at a luncheon organized by a leading truck manufacturer, Omwela revealed that SportPesa left a huge gap after they withdrew their sponsorship.

Despite an impressive performance that saw them almost clinch a title in Vancouver, Shujaa remain without a major sponsor.

When he was asked how they are able to honor the players’ contracts, Owela responded that they have had to seek government intervention:

“We gave the (Sports) Ministry our entire budget for the season, however we are not sure if they will be able to honor it because you cannot sign a contract with the government.

He further said that they had presented a budget of Ksh 124 Million, which would cover both the 15s and 7s teams, both men and women for the entire season. He was hopeful that if the government followed up on the agreement payment plan, they would pull through the season.

However, he was hopeful that due to their impressive form, Shujaa would be able to get a sponsor.
