It’s a sigh of relief for football fans in the Kenya Premier League as the highly anticipated Derby between bitter rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards is set to take place at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, April 21st.
Originally scheduled for Saturday, April 20th, the match faced venue challenges due to Nyayo Stadium hosting the Kip Keino Classic and Kasarani being closed for renovations.
This left Gor Mahia exploring the possibility of hosting the match in Machakos.
However, concerns arose regarding the suitability of Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, with its 8,000-seat capacity lacking proper structures to ensure fan safety, especially considering the volatile nature of matches involving Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.
Traditionally, Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium have been the venues for such high-profile encounters. Yet, the current circumstances presented challenges, particularly for Gor Mahia, who have faced issues with Sports Kenya regarding fan behavior at match venues.
Fortunately, the decision to host the fixture at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi addresses these concerns.
This development comes as Gor Mahia seeks to secure a double over their eternal rivals and maintain their dominance in the league.
With the venue now confirmed, football enthusiasts can look forward to an electrifying clash between two of Kenya’s most storied football clubs, ensuring a thrilling spectacle for fans and players alike.
