Six people were on Monday arrested at the Kiamaiko slaughter house for operating fourteen illegal structures in a raid that was conducted by health ,water and environment departments from the Nairobi City county government.
According to health executive Committee member Mohammed Dagane, the 14 illegal slaughter houses were not approved and did not meet health standards as required by the law.
‘‘We made a resolution to visit this place and see by ourselves what goes on here and it is quite shocking that we have 14 illegal slaughter houses operating. The traders have even connected water and power illegally..’’ Dagane said.
The officials also stated that they also nabbed ‘matumbos’ and meat that were found in the illegal structures.
Sanitation in Kiamaiko slaughter house has been a long term tussle between the county, National Environment Authority Management and the traders and at some point last year the slaughter house was temporarily shut down.
According to Kiamaiko slaughter house management, they have already acquired land in Ruai and Njiru to move partially.
