Matatu collided with a lorry in Delamere

In a statement released by the Kenya Red Cross, the accident occurred at 1:55 pm when the PSV Matatu from SWAT Sacco collided with a transit trailer, causing the driver to lose control and collide with a lorry.

“Among the passengers were 11 students and a driver from Mbihi Friends High School in Mbale,”the statement read in part.

Confirming the Incident, Naivasha police boss Samuel Waweru said the Matatu was carrying students to Nairobi when the accident occurred.

Rising cases of road accidents

This unfortunate incident comes just a day after another fatal accident on the Eldoret Nakuru highway, where four people lost their lives.

According to the police, a Tahmeed bus rolled several times, and the driver claimed to have lost control while trying to avoid an oncoming lorry. Unfortunately, some students walking from school were also knocked down.

Molo sub county Hospital Medical superintendent Dr Susan Wanjiku said 17 people were still receiving treatment at Molo hospital while two patients transferred to Nakuru provincial general hospital (PGH).

The rising number of accidents on Kenyan roads has been a cause for concern, with the National Transport Authority (NTSA) attributing the trend to the increasing number of vehicles that fail roadworthy inspection tests.

According to the latest statistics released by the authority, 1,072 people lost their lives in the first three months of 2023 alone.
