Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has appointed Raila Odinga’s sister as a board member at the Nairobi Water Company.
Beryle Odinga has been appointed a board member alongside Ms Karen Nyamu, former Capital FM editor Michael Mumo and Mr Timothy Muriuki.
Others are Finance CEC Mr Charles Kerich, Emma Mukuhi, Acting County Secretary Mr Leboo Morindat, Mr Martin Mbicire and Mr Mohammed Abdulahi.
Mr Leonard Munyao, a close ally of Governor Mike Sonko, has been named as the Chairman of the board.
The decision was reached at the inaugural meeting of the new board on Wednesday, July 24, 2019.
Little is known about Mr Munyao other than what sources he once served in Tana Water Services Board as a member.
The company has not had a Chairman in a long time. Mr Munyao succeeds Mr Raphael Nzomo. Before him, Mr Peter Kuguru was chairman after founding Chairman Mr Kabando wa Kabando.
The first assignment will be for the board to confirm long serving Technical Director and current acting Managing Director Eng Nahshon Muguna.
Eng Muguna has been acting since the contract of the company’s second MD, Eng Philip Gichuki lapsed. Before him, Mr Francis Mugo served as founding MD.
The company with over Sh10 billion annual budget has been struggling with high “unaccounted for water” estimated at an average 40 per cent.
