Nairobi county government today kicked off the crack down on the supermarkets and businessmen selling unga for more than Ksh 75 per two kilograms.
The operation kicked off at CBD where inspectorate officers stormed several outlets including Naivas and Tuskys together with Eastmats Supermarkets.
The Eastmat supermarket around Fire station Tom Mbaya street was found selling 2 kilogram of Joggo floor at 85 shillings and Jimbi brands at 82 shillings per two kg contrary to proposed 75 shillings.
Eastmat supermarket manager Joseph Mwangi defended himself before the officers saying they purchase Jogoo and Jimbi at high prices from millers and therefore its difficult for them to reduce it as was directed by the government.
‘‘Tunapata unga kutoka kwa kampuni kwa bei ya juu na sisi hatuezi uzaa ungaa chini hiyo kwa sababu hatutapata faida[ we sell them at that price because we buy the at high prices from millers and we must make a profit]’’ he said.
Meanwhile cityhall head of licencing Michael Akoko stated that they will take action against Eastmat for going against the directive of the governor.
