Nairobi county government workers under governor Mike Sonko’s administration continue with their strike demanding their three months salary.
The workers have been demonstrating for two weeks now with county promising to settle them a pledge that has not been honoured to date.
According to Nairobi County Government Workers Union Secretary General Benson Oliang’a they were to be paid yesterday as per chief officer finance pledge but till Tuesday afternoon no one had received payment.
‘‘We are being told that the controller of budget has not approved salary request but what we are left wondering is why the payment has been held….for now that’s not our job we want our employer to sort out whatever is pending so that we can be paid,’’ Oliang’a told Ghetto Radio News.
They have however, blamed Nairobi Metropolitan Services over their payment delays saying NMS split the payroll making it difficult to asses those that have been paid and those who have not yet been paid by NMS.
‘‘After court ruling NMS paid staff who were seconded and we still insist that it’s against the law because NMS is not our employer, so workers being paid salaries by NMS should take note that it’s not just salaries we are demanding but also statutory deductions,’’ he added.
