Nairobi County Assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi has resigned today morning.
Speaking to journalists at his office Elachi says the political environment cannot allow her to continue serving as a speaker in Nairobi and that her move marks another political journey in her life.
When announcing her resignation, Elachi cited threats to her life, infighting and intimidation from Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko.
‘’I humbly tender my resignation to President Uhuru Kenyatta and i want to thank him for giving me an opportunity to serve … Deputy Speaker John Kamangu will take over as acting speaker,’’ Elachi said.
She has further asked Members of the County Assembly of Nairobi to continue supporting Nairobi Metropolitan Services a move she says will ensure the city is developed.
‘‘I urge the assembly to continue supporting the NMS,the president has given us the platform let’s use it to realise development in Nairobi,’’she added.
Elachi had been embroiled in a protracted political war with a section of MCAs in Nairobi and leading the assembly has not been an easy task for her.
