Students Attacked, Injured In JKUAT Protests
Several students were today injured during chaos that rocked the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
The students were allegedly protesting the rising insecurity in the institution and the surrounding Juja area.
The protests saw police officers deployed at the institution become brutal on the students injuring several of them.
A viral video that has gone online shows four police officers battering a female student who is lying helpless on the ground.
Another student is pictured lying injured in a ditch after being clobbered by the armed officers.
Some students were allegedly attacked by same thugs whom they were protesting against before being teargassed by the police.
Bernard Otieno tweeted that his colleague had been at Gashororo area by angry locals.
“Sad NewsJKUAT student has been hit with a panga by angry locals in Gashororo area,” he tweeted.
Another student lamented how he lost his laptop and project to thugs in the same area forcing him to postpone his graduation.
“I lost a laptop worth 72k and it had my project and proposal.i had not backup half of the project..now I cannot graduate upto June..pains..got stressed.. depressed..insecurity is real in Juja and it is somthng that has to be addressed..imagine how your parent will feel,” he said.
JKUAT Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Prof. Robert Kinyua, in a memo issued on Monday, said the Senate had in a special meeting resolved to shut down the institution.
Prof. Kinyua further directed all students to clear from the campus with immediate effect.
