Police have shot dead a suspected criminal gang member in Likoni.
According to the police report, the deceased Matano Masoud aged 22-years-old was in a group of four gang members armed with machetes and other crude weapons.
The deceased is suspected to be in a group of gangs that have been terrorizing residents within the Kindunguni area in Likoni Sub County within Mombasa.
Police say that the deceased was shot dead as he tried to attack police officers who were on patrol.
“The suspects were challenged to stop whereby three ran in different directions but one charged at the officers while screaming and holding a sharp machete,” read the police report.
Police also revealed that they recovered a knife and a sharp machete from the deceased.
The deceased family has denied allegations that their kin was in among those terrorizing residents and called upon IPOA to investigate the death of their family member.
Although the family admitted that the deceased had a pending case in court, they insisted he was shot at his home and not as alleged by police officers.
Three coast based Human rights organizations including MUHURI, Haki Africa and sisters for Justice have condemned the incident and called upon speedy investigation into the matter.
MUHURI rapid response officer Francis Auma said that the deceased was shot thrice.
The deceased body is lying at Coast general hospital mortuary pending autopsy.
