Police in Kisumu today morning shot dead a suspected thug in Kondele, Kisumu County.
The suspect was reportedly killed at around 3am today by officers from Kondele Police Station after him in company of other suspected thugs refused to surrender after they were challenged to stop by the police.
According to a police report the suspect and his gang defied the order and instead drew a knife and confronted the officers.
According to Kisumu Central OCPD James Ng’etich who confrmed the incident says that the police then swung into action and shot one suspect dead.
“It is true, the officers shot him. He was robbing people at night. He was challenged to surrender and give up but he instead decided to confront and finish my officers. Then he was fatally injured,” says Mr. Ng’etich.
Mr. Ng’etich further added that the deceased was in a company of other five guys who ran away after they heard they fellow was shot dead.
“They were five not one, the rest fled. No arrest has been done so far but what we have for now that one,” Ng’etich added.
A knife was recovered from the deceased.
The incident has however drawn sharp reactions from human rights activists in Kisumu who claim that the deceased was not a thug.
“The police were to use their power to arrest him and take him to court if in deed they have the evidence. Police should not take law in their own hands, extra judicial killing is very wrong. For them to say he was a thief means they have evidence, let them produce that evidence to enable us know the complainants and what he had stolen,” says activist Boniface.
He urged that the police should act within the law not outside the law.
The body was later taken to Jaramogi Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmotern.
