Tanzania’s President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli is dead, Vice President Samia Suluhu has announced.
In her address on Wednesday night, Suluhu Hassan said that Magufuli had died of heart conditions.
Suluhu says Magufuli was hospitalized on 14th March at Mzena State Hospital in Dar es Salaam where he succumbed.
“It is with deep regret that I inform you that today… we lost our brave leader, the president of the Republic of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli, the burial date will be announced later,’’ she said.
Opposition politicians led by former presidential hopeful Tundu Lissu said last week that he had contracted Covid-19, but this has not been confirmed by Tanzanian government.
According to Tanzania’s constitution article 37, Ms Hassan is legible to be sworn in as the new president and should serve the remainder of the term.
‘‘Where the office of President becomes vacant by reason of death, resignation, loss of electoral qualifications or inability to perform his functions due to physical infirmity, or failure to discharge the duties and functions of the office of President, then the Vice-President shall be sworn in and become the President for the unexpired period of the term of five,’’ the article states in part.
