Ayra Starr and Tyla were confirmed as first-time nominees by the Recording Academy during their announcement of the nomination list for the 66th edition of the award ceremony.

The ”Rush” hitmaker becomes the first and youngest Nigerian female artist to be nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best African Music Performance category.

The  category includes but is not limited to the Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz genres.”

More Nigerians Dominate The Nomination

Nigerian stars dominated the Best African Music Performance nominations.

They are ‘Amapiano’ by Asake and Olamide, ‘City Boys’ by the Grammy award-winning Burna Boy, and ‘Unavailable’ by Davido feat. Musa Keys, ‘Rush’ by Ayra Starr, and finally ‘Water’ by South African sensation Tyla.

Davido, who is getting his first-ever nomination for the prestigious award, bagged two other nominations for Best Global Album for his latest album, ‘Timeless’ and Best Global Music Performance for his track ‘Feel’.

Fireboy DML earned a nomination in the Album of the Year category for his contributions to Jon Batiste’s ‘World Music Radio.’

CKay earned a Grammy nomination for his work on Janelle Monáe’s ‘The Age of Pleasure,’ which was nominated for Album of the Year.
