Fear has gripped Mwengenye residents in Saika, Nairobi following reports that the area is now facing massive demolitions.
Although the date is not yet confirmed the residents have been communicated to verbally to start vacating the area before bulldozers reign in on them.
Today they held a demonstration at Chemi Chemi grounds asking government to protect them from the impending demolitions.
‘‘We have reports going round that we should start departing but no verbal notice so far…we want to ask the government to protect us from land cartels who want to interfere with lives the of 35,000 people living in this land,’’ they said.
According to Sammy Mwangangi the over 50 hectares parcel was given to them by former president the late Daniel Moi and it was done procedurally.
‘‘Mwengenye were the main dancers of Moi so when mzee heard that we were squatters he ordered then PC Mr. Maina to allocate this land to us and we have all the approved documents from administration,’’ Mwangangi added.
‘‘Some of us were born here we don’t have anywhere to go to and we have children,’’ they lamented.
This comes few weeks after More than 5,000 residents in Njiru area were left homeless, following demolitions that were conducted in the area by the government to pave way for development projects.
