16th Day of June , Kenya joins the World in Celebrating the Day of the African child.

The theme this year being ‘The Rights of the child in the Digital environment ‘

This day we are also commemorating those killed during the Soweto Uprising in South Africa on June 16, 1976, where ten thousand black school children marching while protesting the poor quality of their education and demanding their right to be taught in their own language.

The importance of this Day

As we join the rest of the world in celebrating this day , there is need to keep raising more awareness about the challenges the African child is facing today , including poverty, lack of education, child labor, and child marriage.

Governments, organizations, and individuals should also take action in protecting and promoting the rights of children across the continent.

In addition, this  day is also an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, talents, and potential of African children, who are the future leaders and change-makers of Africa.

Digital safety for children

Here are a few tips , parents and guardians can apply to ensure their children are safe on the ever changing digital environment

a)Access control— Parents are encouraged to keep an eye or rather monitor what the children access on the digital space  this also includes monitoring the amount of time they spend online.

b)Empowerment –  This includes Empowering the child on the effects of the digital space, have a vivid conversation with children explaining to them the dangers they might encounter online . ( Grooming,cyber bullying )  

c) Parents are also encouraged to be digital literate is this era, this will equip them better in also monitoring the children

d) Its necessary that we inform our children to not Accept gifts,or accept  friend requests from persons they do not know .

Cases of child Online exploitation  had adverse effects on the child , which psychologist saying this experiences  lead  to anxiety,  stress, self harm, and in some cases children end up in the world of substance  use.
