Toi market traders have started to reconstruct their stalls just a day after a huge fire razed down hundreds of stalls at the market.

The traders who spoke to Ghetto Radio say that they have to reconstruct very fast over fear of their spaces being grabbed.

“Majority of traders are now re-building their stalls since they are in fear of losing their places to grabbers who we believe organised the fire incident,” said Isaac Mutiota, the markets treasurer.

The reconstruction is happening despite request by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to have the reconstruction suspended until access roads are built.

“Our governor was here yesterday he promised to donate flour, trees and iron sheets. He also advised us not to  re- build until the time an appropriate road will be established since the fire yesterday moved so fast  because there was no roads for fire fighters a accessing the scene. But we fear land grabbers and our lives must go on” added Mutiota.

Sakaja Access Roads

Governor Sakaja on Sunday promised to help the traders rebuild their businesses after the Sunday morning fire.

He also promised to build access roads in the market for emergency vehicles to avert a future crisis.

“Glad that we have also agreed on creating access throughout the market as we rebuild. This will help emergency vehicles move easier when needed,” he stated
