AFC Leopards head coach Tomas Trucha has revealed that the club has missed out on several key transfer targets as the new 2024/25 season approaches.
The Czech tactician, who will be leading Ingwe for his second season after returning in October 2023, expressed concern over the team’s preparation for the season set to kick off on August 24.
Trucha acknowledged that despite scouting extensively and submitting a list of desired players to the club’s management, most of the targets did not sign for AFC Leopards. “Last season, I watched many matches in Kenya Premier League and National Super League (NSL) and from this scouting, we submitted to AFC’s top management the list of players which we wanted to be signed, but most of them did not come,” Trucha shared.
With the league start just days away, Trucha remains optimistic that replacements will be found in time. “Obviously with time running out, we are still looking for other options to strengthen the team,” he added.
AFC Leopards President Dan Shikanda has been vocal about the club’s ambitions to win the Premier League title this season, ending a 26-year drought. However, Trucha emphasized that winning titles requires more than just aspirations. He questioned whether the club has the necessary resources, training facilities, and player quality compared to other top teams in Kenya, warning that “there are no shortcuts in football.”
Despite the challenges, Trucha is focused on ensuring a strong start to the season, recalling the impact of last season’s poor start on the team’s overall performance. Ingwe finished fifth last season and reached the semi-finals of the Mozzart Bet FKF Cup.
AFC Leopards will kick off their new campaign with an away fixture against Mathare United at Dandora Stadium on Saturday, August 24. Trucha is keen on building momentum early, as a strong start could be crucial for their title ambitions.
