Over 800 traders and mechanics are now counting loses after fire razed all their goods at Nyayo Market Ngara .
The fire incident which started at around 7.30 PM burnt down goods worth hundreds of millions.
‘‘The fire started at a sign writer’s stall before it spread to other stalls but what shocked those who tried to put it off is the magnitude and the speed at which it was razing. You could tell that it was being fueled by a substances like petrol,’’ One of the affected trader told Ghetto Radio News.
Some traders are however suspecting ill motif behind the incident saying that they have been told several times to vacate the place to give room for parking space.
‘‘There are rumours they want this space for parking, but why should not they come clean …i have lost 500 clothes in my stall that is around two hundred thousand and every time is excuses,’’ a trader lamented.
Goods lost are clothes, shoes, and vehicle spares parts. A hotel was also razed down to ashes.
Meanwhile the government through Starehe Member of Parliament Charles Njagua and Starehe Deputy County Commissioner has already released Ksh. 9 million shillings to cushion the traders from the losses incurred.
According to Nyayo Traders Vice Chairperson Rahel India Mutisya they have been adversely affected and it will take a lot of time before they rise back to where they were.
‘‘The fire here has occurred countless times, we have to start from scratch again , the president has promised Ksh 9 million shillings and Njagua has also pledged to top up something what we are doing right now is writing the names of the affected traders then we shall follow up on the compensation,’’ She said.
They have called on the government to move with speed to unravel the cause of the fire.
