Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers union is now demanding  for a refund of the housing levy deducted from teachers’ January pay.

The union  Secretary General Akelo Misori says the  teachers employer defied court ruling and deducted the housing levy.

“We have seen in this country teachers being paid even on the 17th of the following month where there were small issues with the payroll. Now a big issue where the Court of Appeal has given an order calls for a recall for any payroll which has gone to the bank,” Misori said.

“Many members from around the country have shared their pays slips with us and they all indicate the Commission deducted the Housing levy tax from the January 2024 salaries. This is despite there being clear orders by the High Court and Court of Appeal declaring the Housing Levy illegal and unconstitutional,” he said.

According to Misori  the court ruling came in good time to allow the commission  make appropriate changes to the payroll.

The project has received opposition from across the board many asking the government to shelve  the same until an amicable route is reached on its legality.

“I am a teacher and I took a house mortgage which I have been financing the last seven years.You then come with another program deducting me another house Levy do that amount to double taxation.? Is that my priority as civil servant? The government must come out and tell us why they should continue deducting this money in a project that our need do not fit.” Jane primary teacher in Nairobi said.

“The Courts pronounced itself and there is no way they will squeeze the same on our throught.The Constitution is very elaborative on our rights as Citizen and any attempt to dwindle the same should be met with full wrath of the law.” She added.
