Two People Killed In Miwani Sugar Mill Clashes

Two people have died following chaos that erupted at the Miwani sugar Mills in Muhoroni Sub County after auctioneers descended on the 10,000 acre property.

Two vehicles, a canter and a saloon car that allegedly ferried youths who accompanied the auctioneers were also torched.

Eyewitnesses say that angry locals who got wind of the auction rushed to the collapsed mill and engaged the youths in running battles and attacked the deceased with crude weapons.

According to Eng. Francis Ooko who is the joint receiver manager for Miwani and Chemelil state owned mills says that they received reports that dozens of youths in Lorries arrived at the mill on Wednesday mid-morning.

“The workers were ordered out of the mill as the group that accompanied the auctioneers raided offices and carted away some items,” Said ENG. Ooko

He added that Miwani through the government had appealed in court regarding the ownership of the mill adding that the auctioneers did not extend any notice as required by law.

“Their lawyers only wrote to the Kisumu high court seeking clarification on the purported action,” he added

Police from Miwani police station have picked up the bodies from the scene and taken to the nearby Mortuary.
