A section of Umoja 2 residents in Nairobi county are living in fear of an outbreak of waterborne diseases like cholera due to burst sewages occasioned by the heavy rains.
The residents claim that the sewer waters are mixing up with pipes chanelling clean water into houses.
“I have lived here for the past 30 years and we have never had a crisis like this. For the past two week, we have not had water because clean water had mixed up with sewer water and had been pumped into some houses,” said Wachira Githanga an area resident.
Githanga who stays in Umoja Zone 2 says that already there people who have already started falling ill following the crisis.
“In Umoja Zone 2, there is an old man who fell ill with his two children. The guy and his children had used the dirty water pumped into their house and have fallen sick,” he says.
Githanga says that their appeals to have the government resolve the issue have fallen on deaf ears.
“We have called on the area MCA, our MP and even the NMS to help us and nothing has been done. The Nairobi City County and even Nairopi Water are very relaxed and are not helping either.”
