University of Nairobi students have accused security officers hired by the the varsity’s administration of harassing the students.

Speaking during a student caucus with human rights defenders in Nairobi, Maxwell Magawa accused Lavington Security officers working in the institution of behaving like thugs.

“The University of Nairobi through the security department has decided to outsource some thugs and criminals from the estate, they report to the security office every morning and evening. Between the night and the morning all they do is roam around the school compound beating up students, in fact there’re are student leaders earmarked for beating,” said Magawa.

Magawa further claims that one student is currently bed ridden after receiving a beating from one of the Lavington security guys on his way back to the institution from a party.

He added that it is very embarrassing that when an institution fails to handle students professionally it resorts to violence.

Magwa is now calling on the Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiangi to take note, intervene, move with speed and eradicate the said thugs before it is too late.

The students’ leader has also put on the spot UoN vice chancellor Prof Isaac Mbeche for not salvaging the situation urging him to step down.
