Controversy on the Track

The collision between Verstappen and Russell sparked strong reactions. Former world champion Nico Rosberg, suggested that Verstappen should have been disqualified from the race.

Rosberg commented, “It looked like a very intentional retaliation.” He added, “If you wait for your opponent to bang into him, that’s a black flag.”

After the race, Verstappen accused Leclerc of driving into him during their overtake. He also claimed that Russell pushed him off the track, forcing him to use the escape road to keep his fourth place at that time.

Verstappen did not deny that his move on Russell, with whom he had a public disagreement last season, was done on purpose.

When asked if it mattered, he simply said, “Does it matter? I prefer to speak about the race than just one single moment.”

Verstappen’s Frustration and Russell’s Surprise

Verstappen played down questions about his chances of defending his drivers’ title. “We are way too slow anyway to fight for the title. I think that was clear again today,” he stated.

When a reporter asked if his reputation was being damaged by the collisions and penalty, he replied, “Is it? Well, that’s your opinion. We will leave it there.”

George Russell expressed his surprise at Verstappen’s actions. He told reporters, “I was as surprised as you guys were.”

Russell compared Verstappen’s maneuver to what he had seen “on simulator games and in go-karting, but never in F1.” He added, “Ultimately, we came home in P4, and he came home in P10. I don’t know what was going through his mind. It felt deliberate in the moment, so, yeah, it was a bit surprising.”

Russell further stated, “It is down to the stewards to decide if it’s deliberate or not. Max is such an amazing driver, and so many people look up to him. It’s a shame that something like that continues to occur. It seems totally unnecessary, and it never seems to benefit him.”

Post-Race Investigations Continue

Following the race, both Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen were called to the stewards’ office. They were asked to provide more information to assist with further investigations into their earlier collision during the race.

This indicates that race officials are still looking into the specifics of what happened between the two drivers, suggesting that more details or decisions might follow.

The incident between Verstappen and Russell, and the subsequent penalty, highlights the intense and often dramatic nature of Formula 1 racing, where every decision and maneuver can have significant consequences for a driver’s race outcome and championship standing.

The opinions of seasoned commentators like Nico Rosberg also underscore the seriousness with which such incidents are viewed within the motorsport community.
