A group of young women from Nairobi have come up with an initiative to sensitize marginalized people in the society to register as voters.
The initiative by the name Virgin Votes is targeting street children, orphans, ex-convicts and women married off at a tender age who are yet to acquire IDs.
Rosemary Okuta the initiative’s leader says that the initiative that has been going on for one month now, has seen them conduct the sensitization on the streets and different polling stations.
“Pale mtaani tumetembea tumepata vijana wengi hawana ID kuna wale wako na ID lakini hawana votes kwa sababu hawajawahi kuchukua kura,” said Okuta.
“Sasa tukaamua kutembea pale mtaani pale kijiji Nairobi tuongee nao kuwaleleza vizuri ili mtu akiwa na kipande achukue kura ako na haki yake ya kuchagua mtu ataamua pale chini,” she said.
Speaking during an interview at Ghetto Radio Okuta says that the initiative’s main aim is to register as many voters as possible the 9th of August 2022.
She says that apart from sensitizing voters, they are also offering solutions to individuals without ID cards urging them to acquire IDs.
“Mtu wa kwanza ulichagua akakuaibishi haimaanishi mtu utachagua tena atakuangusha. Ndiyo maana tunawaomba muende mchukue ID ili mkuwe registered as voters,” she said
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission launched the countrywide voter registration exercise on Monday.
The exercise aims to register at least 7 Million new voters.
