In Summary

  • Life is so thought for single mothers from Kibera slums.
  • Sometimes they opt to serve hot meals to their children late at night

Single mothers from Kibera slums have shared their plight with the current high cost of living.

The women who spoke to Ghetto Radio say that majority of them cannot afford a full meal a day.

They say that this follows the rising costs of commodities including food and other basic needs.

“I’m Faith Wanjiru Kinuthia a single mother of four children, and I can confirm that life is not easy for us single mothers. Like for me a toilet attendant cannot afford a full single meal. Like Ugali and vegetables for me is just a mystery,” said Kinuthia.

According to Kinuthia who is a bread winner to her family back in rural home she opt to serve hot rice to her children late at night for them to take atleast a minute on the table while eating.

“The only thing that we usually do is I buy rice boil it with my kids then serve it hot so that my children,” she said.

” I have children who are in early adolescence and these children eat a lot. So for them at least to enjoy the meal I have to serve it hot. If I serve cold one they will not even take a minute dining. And also I usually serve them late at night when their friends are away and also to sleep with something in the stomach,” she added

She is now calling for the government to lower the price of food so that she can make her children feel that they have a mother.
