Why Kisumu SME sector is on its death bed, MCAs

By Jacob Oluoch

A section of Kisumu County MCAs has faulted Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o of killing the SME sector in Kisumu following the ongoing demolition of markets and business stalls.

The MCAs led by Market/Milimani Ward MCA Adui Nyang’ claim that the ongoing demolitions have denied the county a lot of revenue it used to collect.

According to Adui the revenue collection is at its death bed and the demolitions have killed Kisumu’s SME economy.

Nyong’o had apparently called the MCAs for a pre-budget conference to discuss ways of enhancing revenue resources.

“You cannot talk about enhancing revenue when Kibuye is not there. We used to get a lot of resources from it. Go to my area, the bus park area, we used to get business levies from  KANU areas, Maendeleo areas. All these have been demolished. Go to town, Railways, Lwang’ni and others too demolished,” said MCA Adui Nyang’.

Adui said they will only discuss ways of enhancing revenue after opening Uhuru Business Park, Nyamasaria Park and Otonglo market.

“The national government destroyed markets in Otonglo, Kibos, Muhoroni and technocrats who went to the university are not telling us the pros and the cons and why the Kisumu county government is not getting revenue,” he added.

He urged the county to deal with real factors and stop organizing conferences that are not adding value to anything.

The pre- budget conference was attended by Kisumu county governor prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, Assembly Speaker Elisha Oraro, Deputy governor Mathew Owili, CECMs, City Board Chairman- Elijah Adul, Chief officers and Directors, among others.
