Nairobi county government owes garbage contractors ksh. 600 million.
This debt has left the county struggling to address the garbage menace in the city.
Most contractors have stopped doing their jobs forcing the county government to seek other alternatives that are so far not bearing fruits.
Environment Chief officer Isaac Muraya says Out 60 garbage trucks owned by the county government only 31 are operational.
He say the other 29 have mechanical problems.
Meanwhile in the last financial year the county used ksh. 45.5 million to purchase 5 trucks that currently are not operational.
Last month Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko devolved garbage collection and promised to avail one truck per ward to collect and transport garbage to Dandora dump-site.
