Raila Odingas’ political activities in the country will be highly affected should he assume the chair role and to some extent will curtail his oversight role as official opposition leader.
One of his keys is to ensure regional integration in the horn of Africa. This means he will go slow on confrontational politics and engage fully in his role at Addis Ababa Ethiopia where AU has its headquarters.
Raila will facilitate the functioning, decision-making and reporting of all AU organ meetings and consult and coordinate with Member States’ governments, other institutions and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) on the AU’s activities.
With his integration role Odinga will also disenfranchise his involvement in active politics in the country.
“It is a position that requires high level integration and of course his political activities will be zero in the country. The tone towards the government will be missed and that it calls for other leaders to take the mantle and lead the opposition.” Kelly Wally political commentator said.

Meanwhile former Nigerian president Olisegun Obasanjo is rooting for Odinga chairmanship saying his is the best man for the job.
He has called on the East African Nations to throw their weight behind Odinga and that will be plus for him for top continent job.
“We need a person with experience and who understands the situation Africa is in, and who comes from a background that can make a difference to take charge of AU,If the EAC region backs him, I believe the rest of the continent will support him,’’ Obasanjo said in a press Conference in Karen.
