Women Activists Hold Countrywide Demonstrations Against Murder Of Their Colleague

A group of human rights defenders today held demonstrations across the country demanding justice for their colleague who was killed last week in Isiolo County.

The demonstrations which were held in five counties, Nairobi, Isiolo, Mombasa, Kakamega saw the activists present a petition to the police, the DPP and other bodies calling for urgent call to stop femicide targeting women rights defenders.

According to the activists, the colleague Elizabeth Ibyrahim Ekaru, a passionate lands rights defender was killed by a neighbor over a land dispute.

“We condemn the killing of Elizabeth Ibrahim, an astute Women’s Rights Activist, a peace champion as well as environmental and land rights defender from Isiolo County,” reads the petition.

“Elizabeth was murdered on Monday 3, January 2022 allegedly by her neighbor over a land dispute. Elizabeth was very passionate in defending Land Rights.  She was attending a burial when she was lured to her deathby the suspect who called her aside and stabbed her several times,” the petition further states.

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris who joined the Nairobi demonstrations also called on the government to pay keen attention on the atrocities meted on women and girls.

“We want to make sure that the case that is put is water tight and that justice is served for Elizabeth and her family,” she said.

One suspect has already been arrested.
