Kenya County governments workers Union and Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has now locked horns over plans by the county government of Nairobi to retrench old local authority workers without benefits.
The union’s Secretary General Roba Duba says the plan is unlawful and that they will oppose it to the end adding that Governor Mike Sonko has been undermining old employees in Nairobi.
”Its total gangster-ism we shall not allow Sonko to retrench any old worker without benefits as he puts it. The the move is unlawful and goes against the rights of the workers.” Roba said.
He further raised concerns on huge pension debts that Nairobi county government owes pension schemes like Laptrust and Lapfunds.
”Nairobi owes these schemes Sh. 20 billion pension funds that it does not remit ,how does he want these retrenched employees to survive?” He asked.
Sonko has declared several times his plans to retrench old workers saying that they are not energetic, some are technophobic and that they are not suitable to carry out some duties.
The county government has released a plan for the looming retrenchment, a document that has given headache to the old staff members of the county.
