Youths from Nyalenda B Social Justice Center on Saturday celebrated International day of older persons with the older persons at Nyalenda B Social Justice Center in Kisumu county.
The youths organized a sumptuous meal for the “Wazee” as they conducted a wonderful story telling session and a live entertainments from Atisanna.
Nyalenda social Justice center convener Erick Okioma told Ghetto Radio News that he organized the event to have a meal with the older persons and also learn more about tradition from them.
“This event is usually held on first October, we did ours today due to some reasons. We are to share a meal with ‘wazees’ , learn our traditions. We also used this opportunity to sensitized them on the Inua Jamii cash transfer program to those are not aware,” Said Okioma.
The elderly persons after the meal took home with them household shopping goods.
“We appreciate the contributions that these older people make in our society and we are also glad to put some smile on their faces. After the meals, each took home maize flour, sugar and salt,” Okioma added
Okioma said they that they gave the food items to sustain them for sometime as they suffer a lot to meet their needs.
The older persons on the other side expressed their gratitude following for the recognition.
“Am very happy today, I have enjoyed so much. We have eaten, taken some soft drink and received some shopping as gifts,” Vitalis Owiti Ogony said.
Mama Teresia Awiti Akoth also expressed her joy , adding that life has not been easy for her.
” I have taken some Soda, eaten a good meal and now am leaving with shpping, be blessed,” she said.
Anne Ogola who was among the youths present ,urged youths to always create some time and sit with the elderly groups so that they can learn more on tradition and get impacted with morals.
“I usually know that when food is ready, everyone serves and leaves but today I was advised that food is usually served and people eat together. Nowadays we don’t follow tradition that is why we have many GVB cases, kindly am appealing to youth to create time and visit the old for moral lessons, ” said Anne.
