On May 28, the world marks the World Menstrual Hygiene Day, a time to spotlight the importance of menstrual health which is recognized as the complete physical, mental, and social well-being of women and girls in relation to the menstrual cycle.
Menstrual Hygiene is the ability of women and adolescent girls to manage their menstruation in a hygienic manner, with dignity, using clean menstrual absorbents, and having access to facilities for changing in privacy, as well as for washing their bodies and hands.
PS Anne Wang’ombe Visits Mathare
Principal Secretary, state department of Gender and Affirmative action. Ms Anne Wang’ombe visited Mathare special school to celebrate international menstrual hygiene day
During her visit the PS met with students from Salama Academy together with families who were affected by the recent floods where she distributed menstrual hygiene products.
In an exclusive interview with Ghetto Radio News the The PS said with the help of the National government and UN Women they managed to provide sanitary products and diapers to students and women who were affected by the recent floods.
Further to that the PS encouraged parents to take part in menstrual hygiene education and conversations ,
‘’Wazazi wajue hii sio taboo na waongeleshe watoto pia kuhusu periods , unapata wengine bado wanaogopa kuongea kuhusu periods and its something so normal ‘’
Mathare Residents Express Gratitude
Speaking to Ghetto Radio news Students from Salama Junior Secondary School in Mathare expressed gratitude ,
‘’Niko Age 15 nasoma salama , naskia poa PS amekuja na akatupea pads na panties . Hapa mtaani unapata hakuna pads na nimekua nikimiss kwenda classes . Huwa naomba my friend or my Aunty’’ Narrated one student
Valentine a mother residing in Mathare says she has been struggling to buy diapers and was grateful that she got some assistance
‘’Nilikuwa nafunga mtoto leso,anajikojolea na sasa vile tumepewa 1 packet ya diapers itatusaidia sana’
The Principal Secretary, state department of Gender and Affirmative action. Ms Anne Wang’ombe says that this is an ongoing project that will see students across the country receive sanitary products.
Additionally she says they are working closely with Women Representatives across the country.
