Kenyan police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in the capital Nairobi on Tuesday as a nationwide demonstration against proposed tax hikes got underway.

Crowds had gathered as early as 7 am around the Kenya National Archives.

Along Mbagathi road a section of protestors have also been dispersed as they were making their way to Nairobi’s capital.

Heavy Police Presence

Currently there is heavy police deployment along Parliament Road and the Supreme court

Most businesses and stores in Nairobi remain closed ahead of today’s protests

Police water cannons and Lorries have been used as barricades at key roundabouts leading to parliament.

Heavy police presence has also been reported along Ngong rd .

According to Amnesty International at least 12 prominent social media users have been “abducted in the middle of the night” ahead of protests in Kenya against over-taxation.

Anti Finance Bill Demos

Anti-Finance Bill protests, largely led by Generation Z (Gen Z) and human rights activists, started in Nairobi on June 18, the day the controversial document was tabled in parliament for debate by the National Assembly Finance Committee Chair Kuria Kimani.

Currently the protests have  spread countrywide, with marches witnessed in at least 18 counties.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has ordered anti tax protest that has been organised by Gen Z to end by sunset.

According to the tough talking Cs, they will not allow any demonstrations beyond 6.30 pm evening.

He further warned that the protesters must be peaceful and unarmed.

“The protesters must stop their activities at sunset or at 6.30pm whichever is earlier in accordance with the Public Order Act (Cap 57)…They must make sure that the enjoyment of these rights does not prejudice the rights and freedoms of others,” he affirmed.’’ Kindiki said.
